this is wonderful to read! i wish more deaf people would read it and recognize themselves. if you look closely, we VRS terps DO NOT have a big red and white target painted on us! there is so much i enjoy about the job; but it is probably the hardest i have ever had. i liken it to being an air traffic controller (without the life or death bit.)

in my dream world EVERY deaf person will magically become a VRS terp for an hour; or heck, maybe a full 7 or 8 hour shift. at the end of the day, when their eyes are dry and red, their shoulders are throbbing and their mind is exhausted and full of everything we witness and interpret during the course of our work: abuse, violence, rudeness, mining for gold in the nose, being flipped off, family dysfunction and arguments and disrespect, even an friendly ILY at the end of a call… then they’ll magically be transported back to being Deaf, and will *hopefully* have some modicum of compassion for the difficult, almost impossible job we do.

Wow. I originally posted this on AllDeaf YEARS ago. I can’t believe all the places I’m seeing it posted and copied since (still!). It was just a rant after I got tired of seeing thread after thread bashing interpreters! lol.
